What should I tell my stylist?

I'm getting my hair cut tomorrow, I want a "scene-type" cut but nothing too crazy, I just want a lot of volume on top and then for it to thin out at the ends. I've told my stylist this before but she is and older woman and didn't quite grasp the concept. What kind of layers create this look?

I had a slightly older hairstylist too, she was a freind of my mom's. When she didn't cut my hair in the more modern way I asked, I brought a picture in of exactly what i wanted and she did it perfect.
