Does it seem strange to have your haircut but not talk to the stylist?

Recently I have been getting my hair cut at places with poor communicators as stylists. I found it strange to be with someone so close by who was not talking to me. My attempts at small talk were rebuffed. How do you feel about small talk while getting your hair cut?

I am a hairdresser, and I have to tell you its a distraction to carry on a conversation with a client an to cut a person's hair. I know if your not a hairdresser you really have no idea what I'm talking about . Cutting hair and styling hair takes concentration. There are many thoughts that are in our heads while were working. Trust me, I find it very hard to do a proper job with someones hair and talking about other things at the same time.

We were also taught in school to not talk to the customers while doing their hair because of this. This does not mean not to greet them and be nice to them. I myself have had my haircut by a hairdresser that was bust talking to other customers and other hairstylists and I walked out of there with the worst haircuts because of that, so I know not to talk to them,.. Do you want a conversation or do you want your hair done properly?

yeah i suppose it is weird having your haircut and not speaking to the hairdresser, why don't you try speaking about their family, life and compliment them quite abit, that might bring up a smile :)

I work at a salon and the whole idea of getting your haircut is the experience! When you arrive you want to be greeted and treated special, you want to have a conversation and be offered a coffee. And when your at the basin you want a nice head massage. And most of all you need to feel comfortable with your stylist! This includes a friendly chat! I enjoy some small talk whilst i'm getting my haircut it helps to break the ice and become friends! I think its rude to be rebuffed when offering some small talk!

I am a hairdresser also and it's rude for the stylist not to talk to you. I have had my hair cut by others and it makes me feel uncomfortable to be in a chair and not get acknowledged. I always make people in my chair feel welcomed and small talk is better than not talking at all. If you can't talk and cut hair, then they have no business cutting hair in a salon that wants growth. If your stylist don't talk to you than they probably don't feel a connection with you. If you try talking then get ignored than I'd find another place to get my hair cut.

I know how you feel. It is so awkward sitting there and the stylist is not talking to you.

I trained as a hairdresser when I left college although decided not to take the career on, but one of the things we were told is that it is really important to be able to make small talk with the clients to make them feel comfortable. Imagine sitting there for three hours while you get colour, foils, and a trim and blowdry, all in silence as they stylist doesnt want to talk?! That would be awful

To be a good hairdresser, you need to be a good stylist and also have good people skills, your stylist clearly doesn't have the people skills, so I imagine he or she doesn't have a very big clientele.

I suggest you ask for a different stylist next time you get your hair done =]

I think small talk is unnecessary. I prefer them to just do their job without much distraction. Maybe thats what they want too. And yes it's pretty strange, but its better to walk out the saloon with a nice hair cut than a good conversation.
