How much do you tip hair stylists?

Here's the thing. I go to a pretty pricy salon on the rare occassion that I do have my hair done with the total bill coming to around $200. I understand that the stylist doing my hair does not make anywhere near that, even though I am paying it. I normally tip as I would tip a Waitress...between 15 and 20%. But is a $40 tip for an hour and a half reasonable? If you're a stylist, what would you expect to be tipped for a cut, highlight and style coming to $200? I don't want to give any less than is customary, but $40 seems like a lot for a tip.

i've been given up to 100% of the total bill for a tip (by a man who i didn't care if he came back because he was such a jerk) and as little as a big hug and crying because she liked her new look so much (mother with children; no job; living in a woman's shelter).

i would rather have the big hug and a tear or 2 knowing that you love your new look, personally.

wow $200 dollars for a haircut well i had a really good hair cut that only costed $31 and she blow dryed it and straightened it to and i gave her 10 dollars cuz she did such a good job but i mean if u dont like the haircut dont leave that much but always leave something they deserve it!! hope this helps!! good luck!!

I usually tip 10bucks if it looks good. But I also goto a cheap salon here in my town. Where my hair cut only costs 25 atmost. If 40bucks sounds reasonable to you and you like your hair, then sure. Why not!

$40 seems like you're over tipping but considering what you spend and what the internet says about tipping hairdressers...you're alright. From various sites, the recommended tipping rate for hairdressers/barbers is 20%. Hope this helps!!
