I've been a hairstylist for 27 years. I honestly don't know why you'd get 6 or 7 inches off when you ask for an inch off. Communication is VERY important when getting a good haircut. I always talk with a first time client for a bit before cutting. I ask lots of questions. I'l rephrase what they've said because sometimes how they say it and what I think they're saying can be different. Words like "layering" , "feathering", "texturizing", "one-lengh", "thinning", "fringey" can mean something different to the client than to me. But one inch is alot different than 6 or 7 inches. I do actually show the client with my fingers what one inch is to me. And I do have combs with inch markings on them. I do use that as well to show the clients what 2 inches or 4 inches, etc. mean. You do need to make sure the hairstylist knows what you mean by one inch. Do take a ruler if you want. Maybe your stylist won't have inch markings on her tools. Also show with your fingers how much you want off. Or show on your back or shoulders what lenghth you want it to be. Good luck....just don't be shy...talk to your stylist and make sure you both understand each other before he/she starts cutting.

try a beauty school. i know it's kind of scary but the instructor is near-by to help out if the student needs it. the prices are usually pretty good and they're "up" on all of the latest trends and techniques. if you're having that much trouble with stylists, do take a ruler! or on their comb show them how much you want taken off. most stylist's combs have inch marks on them. take the comb and put your finger on the on inch mark and say "this much. that's all. if i want more after, i'll tell you." you can always take more off but you can't put it back on!
